Helping a Reactive OTTB Stay Calm on the Trail

Wally – Part 1 of 2

Wally – Part 2 of 2

Some horses don’t just hesitate when asked to leave home – they unravel! Wally, an 11-year-old OTTB, was overwhelmed the moment he stepped away from the herd, spinning, bolting, and unable to regulate his worry. This session shows what can change when a horse finally feels understood.

Across this two-part, real-time training session, you’ll see Wally shift from anxious and reactive to thoughtful, soft, and connected. Through clear groundwork, emotional regulation, and a calm, consistent conversation, I help him change how he responds to pressure, how he processes worry, and how he transitions from overwhelm into genuine curiosity.

You’ll watch the exact steps that made it safe for him to take his first truly calm walk down the trail – a moment his owner never believed possible.

What you’ll see in this session:

  • Recognising early threshold signs in sensitive, anxious horses
  • Nervous-system regulation and why stillness sometimes creates more worry
  • Using rhythmic and steady pressure to build understanding
  • Fixing the “rushing ahead” / crowding problem with soft boundaries
  • Encouraging thinking instead of reacting
  • How movement-based release helps a worried horse settle
  • Small circles for balance, softness, and emotional resets
  • Preparing a reactive or herd-bound horse to leave the property
  • Wally’s first calm steps on the trail (edited highlight sequence)
  • Owner reflections and the emotional shift in their partnership

Perfect for riders dealing with reactive horses, anxious OTTBs, herd-bound behaviour, separation anxiety, trouble leaving home, or horses who spiral the moment they step off the property.

If you’ve ever felt unsure how to help your horse stay calm, think, and soften, or if you’ve felt overwhelmed by their anxiety, this session will give you the clarity, confidence, and tools to move forward.

Wally isn’t a “problem horse.” He’s sensitive, thoughtful, and easily overwhelmed, like so many horses labelled difficult or dangerous. This session shows how much changes when we slow down, listen to the small signals, and offer leadership that feels safe, consistent, and fair.

When a worried horse learns to regulate with you, not away from you, their whole world opens up: softness returns, connection strengthens, and new possibilities emerge – even something as simple and profound as a calm walk down the trail.

Real progress doesn’t come from forcing miles under saddle. It comes from helping the horse feel safe enough to try.

🎥 No quick fixes. No fancy edits. Just honest, real-time horse training exactly as it happens.
